Letter From The President: May 2025

Hot enough for you?

Well, that seemed like a very short Spring! These warm and humid days really seem to be coming early. I’m grateful for A/C in the house when I come in from working my bees. Speaking of bees, I hope yours are as busy as mine. All of my deeps have their own supers filled with groceries and most have a couple supers of honey in the process of being capped for me. After such a drought, I hope we’ll get a decent flow as we head into June.

Apologies to you, faithful reader. This missive is quite late, with our next meeting just a day away. What can I say? I’ve BEEn busy.

Rich Beckman and his band of Beeks did a fine job representing us once again at the Edgewater Earth Day celebration. They did such a good job last time that the Edgewater folks asked us back. Special thanks to the several members who took one for our team!

April Meeting

The April 5:30 Practical Hour was a carpentry bonanza. Jim Pescha showed of his gorgeous Top Bar hive and Team Henderson displayed and discussed their hand made elongated horizontal hive. We are lucky to have such crafty colleagues, and lucky they are so generous with their knowledge.

Tucka Saville was our speaker and she provided a captivating and informative talk about Queen Honeybees! Tucka has so much knowledge and experience, I am sure we got only a sample. Indeed, her performance was so fantastic that I heard one veteran beekeeper proclaim herself a “Tucka Groupie”! Lets hope Tucka will find time to continue educating us.

Patti and her hospitality crew continue to impress. I was happy to see members chipping in a few bucks for the good chow.

Upcoming Meeting May 28th

Our 5:30 practical hour will feature BKVC Board Member At Large(that’s a mouthful!) Craig Loewinger talking about his Flow Hive and BKVC Member Trevor Piper sharing his secrets and expertise in queen rearing. Easy access honey and raising one’s own queens, 2 of every beekeeper’s dreams.

The speaker at our May meeting (Red Alert! It’s actually tomorrow!) Is Billy Fussel our rep from the Florida State Beekeepers Association (FSBA). Billy will be sharing his own personal beekeeping journey, from backyard beekeeper/hobbyist to full time Commercial Beekeeper. It should be a great talk.

Remember, there will be a raffle for a 2 day ticket to the Next Bee College. Bee College should be on every beekeeper’s calendar.

Once again, Vice President, Miranda Tressler, will have BKVC Tee shirts for us to purchase at a discounted price. There are some left, so bring money.

Design Competition A design competition will be held for T- shirts and/or ball caps. The winner will be announced at the June meeting. Award: One T-shirt or ball cap featuring the winning design and a 2 lb. donation of honey.

BREAKING NEWS!! Our location at the 2025 Volusia County Fair and Youth Show is changing! You may have noticed major construction and Rehab at the Fairgrounds. Well, several Buildings are undergoing renovation and we will be in one of the newly renovated buildings. The good news is we will be in air conditioned space. More at the meeting.

I hope to see you tomorrow for our May meeting!
