Letter From The President: April 2025

Hello again, fellow beekeepers.

Are you and your bees busy enough yet? Whew, the spring flow is on and my bees are racing about, bringing in both nectar and honey. Although the Spring honey seems to be a bit late here, most of my colonies are starting to fill up honey supers. I hope your bees are working hard as well!

March Meeting

The March 5:30 Practical Hour had both rookie and veteran beekeepers out in the parking lot, firing up smokers and showing off favorite tools. We managed to avert several potential brush fires, and everyone had a great time!

We had a lot of raffling going on. Chris and Lauren Keene donated a new Langstroth hive kit and Billy Fussell sent over 10 vouchers for Honeybee license plates. All were raffled off and the funds added to our treasury. Thank you Keenes and Billy!

University of Florida Professor of Entomology and Nematology Cameron Jack shared his scholarly yet practical research on treatments for Varoa infestations. His presentation, Seasonal Efficacy of Varoa Treatments provided important guidance on which treatments work best at different times of the year. It was a helpful and thought provoking talk.

As usual, Patti and the hospitality crew provided a table full of delicious treats for hungry beeks.

Upcoming Meeting April 23rd

Our 5:30 practical hour will feature a battle of the hive makers! Jim Pescha will be demonstrating his handmade Top Bar Hives and Seth and Krystin Henderson will show off their elongated version of the Langstroth. If anyone wants to bring their own exotic hive type, please feel free. Any Flow hive aficionados out there?

Our March speaker is Tucka Saville, longtime breeder of honeybee queens. Tucka knows queens, and I’m sure we will have a million questions!

Once again, be sure to bring some cash to the meeting. BKVC Tee shirts are available for sale and order. Please see Vice President Miranda Tressler to buy or order yours. Also available are those very stylish Honeybee name tag lanyards which help us get to know each other. See Patti Fort for those.

And if you haven’t done so already, please bring cash, a check, or the ability to Zelle for dues. Dues remain $30.00 per year, an enormous bargain! See Treasurer Seth Henderson to pay.

Earth Day in Edgewater

Our club has been invited to appear at the Edgewater Earth Day festivities on Saturday, April 26th. We will be educating the public and selling our honey from 10AM to 1 PM. Volunteers are needed to help set up, man (and woman) the booth, as well as helping to pack up afterwards. Club members are urgently needed to volunteer. Contact Public Affairs chair Richard Beckman at (386) 451 9766 or yours truly at (808) 381-4077 to help.

Reminder, our Facebook group is Beekeepers of Volusia County Florida Official Club. Be sure to visit often for important announcements and updates as well as beekeeping opportunities!

Another reminder: Remember those really cute beekeeping photos you took? That beekeeping article, your favorite honey recipe? Please send these sorts of things and more to our website guy, Charles Bennett at cbennett1959@gmail.com

I hope to see you Wednesday evening.

Your fellow member of the hive,

Jeordie
